Barred owls will care for their young for around four months, much longer than most other owl species. From your description I couldn’t tell the size of the dark birds but my guess is that they were crows or grackles or blackbirds (listed in descending size). It is such a delight to see owls and you did a great job shooting video through your scope! They take the small prey in full and bits the big prey in bits, eating the head before the entire body. Barred Owls hunt during the night and will roost in the daytime. However, you are barely using it. Barred Owls are mainly nocturnal and hide their daytime roosts extremely well. Marcy is great!
